Early Life

He received training in horse riding, sword fighting, and warfare at an early age. These skills later helped him become an excellent military leader.


Service under Kittur Kingdom

Rayanna served in the army of the Kittur kingdom. He became one of the trusted commanders of Kittur Rani Chennamma, the queen of Kittur.

During this period, the British East India Company was expanding its control over Indian kingdoms. The British attempted to annex Kittur after disputes regarding succession to the throne.

Rani Chennamma opposed British interference and decided to resist their rule.


The Kittur Rebellion

In 1824, the British attacked Kittur. Rani Chennamma and her soldiers fought bravely against them. Sangolli Rayanna played a major role in organizing the army and defending the kingdom.

Although the British eventually captured Kittur and imprisoned Rani Chennamma, Rayanna did not surrender.
